Focus Group Discussions

Overview

FieldSocio’s FGD module supports multi-speaker recording with speaker identification, tagging, and AI-powered analysis.

Setting Up an FGD

  1. From your project, tap FGDs
  2. Tap New FGD
  3. Configure the session:
FieldDescription
TitleTopic or theme of the discussion
LanguagePrimary language spoken
LocationWhere the FGD is taking place
ParticipantsNumber of participants and their details
  1. Add speakers — Register each participant with a name or identifier so you can tag their contributions during the session

During the Discussion

  • Record the full session
  • Tag speakers — Mark who is speaking at any point
  • Add markers — Flag key moments, agreements, or disagreements
  • Take live notes — Type observations alongside the recording

Speaker Management

Each speaker in the FGD can have:

  • A name or pseudonym
  • Demographic details (age, gender, role)
  • Individual consent status
  • Tagged segments in the transcript

After the FGD

Once the recording is processed:

  • Full transcript with speaker labels
  • AI-generated summary of key discussion points
  • Auto-coded themes
  • Speaker-level contribution analysis

Best Practices

  • Limit groups to 6-12 participants for productive discussion
  • Assign a note-taker in addition to the recording
  • Use speaker tags consistently throughout the session
  • Capture the seating arrangement for reference
  • Record informed consent for all participants before starting
